What is a neck lift?

People say the first sign of aging shows around the eyes. A close second, if not first, is the neck.

Plastic surgery patients come in all the time with concerns about the vertical and horizontal bands on their necks in addition to the loose skin, “turkey-gobble,” and double chins. Essentially, their jawline changes with age. It happens.

Dr. Michael Wojtanowski has performed thousands of neck lift procedures in Cleveland. The medical term for a neck lift is Cervicoplasty. It is performed as an outpatient procedure under anesthesia and can be done in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift or eyelift - or it can be performed as a stand-alone procedure.

There are three ways a Cervicoplasty or neck lift can be performed:

  1. Liposuction alone
  2. Liposuction with surgical tightening of the platysma muscle (the muscle that shows the turkey gobble appearance)
  3. Liposuction, platysmal muscle tightening and removal & tightening of excess neck skin.

Some patients may carry extra weight in their necks, and it may not be reflective of their bodies. In this instance, the procedure can be done with liposuction alone. The goal is to offer a patient a more defined and sculpted jaw line.

Some patients, who also show loose skin may require a combination of the various techniques described above in order to achieve an optimum result.

The key here is that surgery for neck concerns is the absolute GOLD standard. No non-surgical treatment can produce the long lasting and noticeable results that surgery can offer.

The amount of time it takes to recover from a neck lift surgery varies from person to person. Patients may experience bruising, numbing and tightness. While they will be presentable to return to work and go to social functions in as early as a week, full recovery may take several weeks.

It is imperative a patient works with a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery like Dr. Wojtanowski at Ohio Clinic for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery in Cleveland. The level of experience of your surgeon will affect the outcome and success of your surgery.
